Taking the train is a relaxing way to get to mountain railway and you get to enjoy the beautiful scenery in the Schwarza valley as you approach your destination.

You can take Deutsche Bahn trains to reach Erfurt and Saalfeld. From either of these two towns, you can catch an hourly train to Rottenbach, where you can then use your Bergbahn Day Ticket for onward travel. From Rottenbach, there is a direct connection from platform 1 to the Schwarzatalbahn and Thüringer Bergbahn. Change at Obstfelderschmiede valley station for the funicular railway.

Make sure you only book train tickets as far as Rottenbach. The Bergbahn Day Pass is valid from Rottenbach onwards.

Directions:

• From the North: 
  A71, exit Ilmenau Ost (15)
• From the East:
  Via the A9 go onto the A4, exit Jena-Göschwitz, continue on the B88 towards Rudolstadt, then head to Bad Blankenburg. In Bad Blankenburg, follow the junction in the direction of Sitzendorf, which is located inside the Schwarzatal
• From the South:
  A73, exit Eisfeld Nord, continue on the B281 via Masserberg
• From the West:
  A4, motorway junction "Kreuz Erfurt" continue onto the A71 in direction of Schweinfurt, exit Ilmenau Ost (15)
